Want to get some additional use out of your garage by turning it into a living space? Here’s how the process typically goes.
Many homeowners want to increase the amount of livable space available to them but doing so without breaking the bank isn’t always easy. Full-scale additions are costly and require a good deal of work and in comparison, a garage conversion is an appealing option for many and can add around 600 square feet of livable space to your home. However, there are some drawbacks to take a look at as well. Read on to find out how—and why—garages are so commonly converted into living spaces.
Garage conversions can take between 4-6 weeks and involve quite a bit of work. This includes raising the floor height to allow for insulation to be installed, as well as insulation being installed in the walls and ceilings. Heating and cooling elements must be added to the space either by taking advantage of the house’s main systems or by adding independent systems. Then, there’s also the little details that come down to comfort and preference like electrical upgrades, windows and doors, and of course, furniture.
A poorly done garage conversion still feels like, well, a garage. If you want the job done right, there is a lot that goes into hiding the fact that the space used to be used to store vehicles. Removing evidence of old garage door openings and installing windows are all fantastic ways to button up a converted garage. Proper planning and design can go a long way in making your garage conversion feel successful.
While converting a garage may be one of the most affordable ways of adding space onto your home, there are some drawbacks. First, the obvious: you’re going to be losing your nice indoor parking space, meaning you won’t have the weather-protection getting in and out of your vehicle anymore. You may also be losing space for storage, but if this isn’t an issue for you, then a garage conversion is key in gaining more space.
