How to Choose the Right Floor Plan for Your Custom Home

Here are some tips to help you decide which floor plan is perfect for your custom home.

One of the best parts of building a custom home is choosing the perfect floor plan for your needs. The right floor plan can improve how you experience your home, and you should consider everything from shape to style. You can create a floor plan that will combine your family’s needs while containing enough functionality and space for the unexpected.

We know this sounds overwhelming, but weighing your options doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are some tips to help you decide which floor plan is perfect for your custom home.

Consider the Size

When deciding which floor plan to select, consider the size you want your house to be. Depending on the size of your family, the size of your home can vary greatly. Since a custom home is an investment in your future, reflect on factors such as lifestyle, hobbies, and family age. What long-term needs will your family require in the future?

If you choose a larger floor plan than necessary, you may have extra space and nothing to fill it with. Also, too large a home will result in overspending on square footage and take money away from other priorities like a screened porch, larger garage, or granite countertops.

On the other hand, if you have a big family or a lot of possessions, you could feel cluttered if you choose a smaller floor plan. Choose the one that suits your budget and personal situation. Don’t get too caught up on square footage. The right floor plan can help you maximize the space available. Make a list of what you want to fit in your new home, then review that list as you consider your family’s evolution.

Factor in Your Personal Style

Design is a huge aspect of making you feel at home in your new house, so it’s not something you should overlook. Think about how you’d like to design your new home. For example, would you prefer a modern sectional sofa or an antique chaise lounge? Do you have art you want to display? Decoration and furniture style should absolutely be considered.

An open floor plan could work if your furniture tends to coordinate. A traditional floor plan might be a better option if your furniture covers many styles throughout your home.

Consider Your Family’s Lifestyle

You should choose a floor plan that will fit your daily activities. Examine your priorities. If you love entertaining, choose a floor plan with space to prepare and serve food, mingle, and dine. If you love to cook, the kitchen layout is very important. If you love the outdoors, your ideal floor plan should include easy access and views of outdoor spaces.

It is important to be realistic about this. For example, you might want to be a person who cooks elaborate meals, but if that isn’t your reality, it would be a waste of budget to invest heavily in the kitchen.
