One aspect of custom home building that is often overlooked is the floor. Consider the floor plans you have been offered: how many levels does your new home have? What about the placement of individual rooms? These are just some of the questions you probably want to ask. But there is one that is even more important: what does open-concept mean?
The open-concept technique is focused on removing barriers and opening up the interior of your home. Walls that divide rooms are removed, but load-bearing walls are left in because otherwise your home wouldn’t have much structure and we can’t let that happen! The open-concept method also intends to combine multiple common areas into one space, such as the living room, the dining room, and the kitchen.
If you need more room inside your home, then consider using the open-concept floor plan to unite the living room and the dining room. Using a different paint scheme for each room can help you define where you are.
Another idea is to combine the dining room and the kitchen. This helps improve traffic flow, especially if you have a larger family. Open-floor plan kitchens will also often have islands or peninsulas in them. They can act like dividers without fully separating either room.
If you prefer socializing, then combining the kitchen and living room makes a great deal of sense. It means everyone can gather for conversation or meals without walls getting in the way, especially when it’s time to sit down and watch some TV.
The apex of open-concept floor plans is the so-called great room. This is where the kitchen, dining room, and living room all come together. Even if each part of the great room has its own personality, there is still a sense of unity.
