Condo Remodeling: Getting Started

If you’re unsure where to start with your condo remodeling project or just totally lost, here are some steps to get on track.

Remodeling your condo can turn your house into a home. Getting the desired results can be a lengthy process, but in the end, you’ll have a space perfect for you. While every condo remodeling project is unique, each begins with the same question, “Where do I start?”

If you’re unsure where to start with your condo remodeling project or just totally lost, here are some steps you can follow to get on track.

Talk to Your HOA Board

Most condominiums have a homeowner’s association board. Before you get started, find out the rules and regulations of your community regarding remodeling. There will likely be guidelines as to when you can build, as well as restrictions and limitations in terms of design. Not checking these rules will cause more than a headache or two. It can also cause frustrations when receiving deliveries or working with contractors. Even worse, it could lead to a bad relationship with those on the HOA board.

Create a Condo Remodeling Timeline

Some condo remodeling projects will take more time than others. Depending on the time and scope of the work, the typical rule of thumb is anywhere from 3 to 7 months. Plan for longer timeframes, and be flexible if you do a complete remodel!

Find Some Inspiration

Finding inspiration for your new condo remodel is the best way to get excited about your project! Seek inspiration from free websites like Houzz and Pinterest. You can also search popular home magazines for the newest trends. This is also a great time to begin window shopping at furniture stores and pick out pieces that would look perfect in your new space. Keep your favorite photos and color swatches to turn them into an inspiration board, an excellent way to make your vision come to life.

When finding inspiration for your condo remodeling project, it’s important to know your limits. Keep your budget and your building’s limitations in mind. Some condos have smaller rooms and tight spaces, and they may not be big enough to fit the six-piece sectional sofa you fell in love with.

Hire an Experienced Contractor

Most municipalities require a licensed contractor to renovate or remodel a condo. A homeowner cannot renovate their condo, unlike a single-family home, where such work is permitted. By hiring a professional, they will go above and beyond typical contractor responsibilities. They may be able to coordinate with your homeowner’s association, get permits, schedule deliveries, and more.

At Accessible Home Builders, you’ll have a dedicated team working with you every step of the way. Most of our employees have been with us for at least 10 years, some even as long as 20 years!
